I can announce today that I have sold creditcard.net.au to set a new sales record in the .au space for a .net.au domain name. If you may recall, Pacific Octane Pty Ltd set the record for acquiring creditcard.net.au back in September 2010 at $15,001.00. In May of this year, jobs.net.au sold for $15,500.00 as reported here.
Shortly after we purchased creditcard.net.au the muffled whispers of “he overpaid” and “there’s no way a .net.au is worth $15,000.00″ and “what an idiot he deserves to choke on it” were coming from the bushes of the backseat drivers. I had a strategy in place for the name and the agreement did not get done. I won’t go into the dynamics and break down of the deal, but my analysis suggested a spend of at least $10k per month on search engine optimisation alone and we were not prepared to take that sort of risk in the super highly competitive market of the credit card vertical market.
On August 29, 2011 I approached the owner of creditcard.com.au, which is a highly successful website and a leader in the credit card vertical market because they own the keyword domain name that’s the category killer. On August 30, 2011 we came to a negotiated price of $18,200.00 +gst. Out of respect for the buyer, I did not disclose the record setting domain name sale at that time because of the increasing competition in his space and it would have been unfair to give him added pressure of staying on top.
Why did he make the purchase? Well, he would have to answer that question directly to be certain. However, as I have stated time and time again with regard to brand and securing a brand online, you must secure the matching domain name. The latest segment as my role as the Virtual Property Expert on Real Estate News on the Sky Business Channel shares more about this regarding your business and doing business online.
I like this record setting domain name sale in the .net.au for 2 reasons:
1. I was the one that set the record and being an expert in value and understanding of domain names and in particular .au domain names, it reinforces that my decision to purchase was justified and I could show not only a new domain name record sale, but a great return on my investment as well.
2. It demonstrates the importance of securing your brand when you are a web based business.
The new .au domain name record sale for a .net.au once again is creditcard.net.au at $18,200.00. I like the fact that I was involved in the record sale via the purchase for $15,001.00 and then involved again with the sale of it within a couple of weeks of the 1 year anniversary of purchase.
